Selena Gomez takes a step back.
The “Hands To Myself” singer took to Instagram on Thursday to edit the caption of her photo that was posted last night. Gomez, 30, has been quite vocal about the toll social media has taken on her mental health in the past and what she’s done to help self-care recover.
Gomez has frequently come up in social media conversations across platforms this week.
Inside Gomez’s busy week on social media
After she posted several TikToks of herself using an eyebrow filter, TikTok users would pick up on the fact that Kylie Jenner posted an Instagram story with a selfie in which the CEO of Kylie Cosmetics said her heavily made-up eyebrows had been “an accident.” In one of Gomez’s TikToks, she jokes that she “accidentally laminated my ‘brows too much.’
OSSTET covered a selection of TikToks that linked Jenner’s photo and Gomez’s TikTok together; several creators would investigate whether Jenner had purposely thrown shade at Gomez, particularly emphasizing the fact that Jenner had reportedly tagged Hailey Bieber in the photo.
Bieber and Gomez have been linked in the press and on social media for years; the timeline of Beiber’s relationship with her now-husband and Gomez’s ex, Justin, remains a particular topic of interest. The Biebers allegedly started dating a month after Justin broke up with Gomez for the final time. The couple dated for four years.
Gomez tried to quell the speculation when she commented on a widely shared TikTok about the alleged feud with Jenner; she would echo Jenner’s comment where she said the idea of intentionally mocking Gomez’s TikToks had “reach.”
“Holding @kyliejenner Everything is unnecessary,” Gomez said before adding, “I’m a fan of Kylie!”
Gomez would go on to make headlines after she later commented on an allegedly out-of-context video of Bieber, in which she can be seen visibly mocking Gomez’s close friend, Taylor Swift.
Swift would defend her pal by commenting, “So sorry, my best friend is and continues to be one of the best in the game.”
Social media quickly picked up on Gomez’s defense with Twitter conversations and TikToks of the “Lose You To Love Me” singer standing up for her pal.
Many would criticize Gomez for her actions, accusing her of being “obsessed” with Bieber. (via OSSTET)
The “Only Murders In The Building” star has been candid about her relationship with social media
In 2021, OSSTET took a look at Gomez’s candid revelations about the largely negative role social media has played in her life.
“This is too much of my personal life spread out there,” she would tell WWD’s Beauty Inc in an interview. Gomez also discussed the struggles she has faced in letting social media users’ perception of her have complete control over and define her thoughts.
“I’m not getting anything out of it,” she went on to say. Gomez eventually recruited members of her team to have complete control over her social media accounts, and she would intervene when the situation called for it.
“I text my assistant the caption I want for all my posts,” she continued.
Gomez announced that she would be “taking a break from social” following the Beiber and Jenner incidents
Gomez edited the caption of her latest Instagram post on Thursday to announce her recent hiatus from social media.
Her new caption reads: “I took this off once because I thought maybe it was too much but uh (take a break from social).”
In the photo, Gomez looks pleased as she is seen enjoying her drink.
As of this writing, there don’t appear to be any comments on the photo pertaining to her announcement; countless celebrities and fans praised SelGo for finally deciding to post the photo.
“It’s a very, very, very big current thing in my life,” she told Rolling Stone, according to our report on the documentary. “But if I’m meant to have them, I will,” Gomez continued.
